Lots of children have teeth that are not perfectly straight. Some will benefit from a brace, and others will not need one. These are some of the things to watch for, and what to do next.
Signs to look for
- Crowded or crooked teeth.
- Upper front teeth that stick out.
- Gaps between the teeth.
- Upper and lower teeth that do not fit together properly when your child bites.
- Adult teeth that seem to be taking a long time to come through.
If you spot any of these, mention them to your dentist at your child’s next check-up.
The best age to start
For most children, the ideal time to begin brace treatment is between 12 and 14 years old, once most adult teeth are through. If your child is younger, we may suggest seeing them again later. Find out more about braces for children and teenagers.
How to get an assessment
For health service (NHS) treatment, your child will need a referral from your dentist. For private treatment, you can refer yourself. At the first visit we take photographs and a 3D scan, and talk you through the options.
