For private treatment, most teenagers can choose metal braces or clear aligners. The orthodontist will let you know which options are right for your teeth.
Metal braces
- Attached to the teeth, so they are working all the time.
- Checked every 8 to 10 weeks.
- Available privately, or on the health service (NHS) if your child qualifies.
Smartee clear aligners
- Worn 20 to 22 hours a day. We recommend the 30-minute rule: they should never be out of your mouth for more than 30 minutes at a time.
- Move on to the next set at home once a week.
- Only available privately – the health service does not provide them.
The cost
While under 18, private braces or Smartee clear aligners cost £2,900 through our under-18s offer (usually £3,900) for as long as the patient is under 18. You can pay a £900 deposit, then the rest in 12 monthly payments. A £150 plan fee is added to the remaining balance and divided across your 12 monthly payments. See private braces for under-18s.
Some younger children start with a removable brace or Twin Block. These are worn 20 to 22 hours a day, and should never be out for more than 30 minutes at a time. See braces and Twin Block.
