Braces for adults
It is never too late for straighter teeth – choose metal braces or clear aligners.
Going ahead with treatment? Your £155 assessment fee is deducted. When you choose private treatment after your private assessment, the £155 already paid is taken away from your overall treatment cost. If you use our payment plan, we take it off the £900 deposit, so your deposit is £745 and the monthly amounts do not change. Cross-border (HSE) patients are not included.
It is never too late
There is no upper age limit for orthodontic treatment. Healthy teeth and gums can be moved whatever your age.
Lots of adults from Portadown and the surrounding area see us because they never had braces when they were younger, their teeth have shifted with time, or gaps and crowding have begun to bother them.
You will be looked after by our orthodontic team, which includes orthodontic therapists, our dentist with enhanced skills in orthodontics, Dr Méabh Maguire, and our specialist orthodontist, Dr William Maguire.
At a glance
- No upper age limit.
- Choose metal braces or Smartee clear aligners – they cost the same (from £2,900, depending on complexity), where they are right for your teeth.
- Refer yourself – private treatment does not need a referral from your dentist.
- Spread the cost across 12 months: a £900 deposit followed by 12 monthly payments (a £150 plan fee is added to the remaining balance and divided across your 12 monthly payments).
- Retainers for life afterwards to keep your teeth straight.
Your options
Clear aligners
Clear, thin trays you can take out, each one moving your teeth a small amount. Our aligners are Smartee aligners. They need to be worn for 20 to 22 hours a day, and you remove them to eat and to clean your teeth.
From £2,900, from £3,900 or from £4,900, depending on how complex your case is.
About clear alignersMetal braces
Little brackets are attached to your teeth and linked by a wire. Because fixed braces are working all day and night, there is nothing to remember to put in.
From £2,900 – priced the same as aligners, according to complexity.
About metal bracesAt your assessment, the orthodontist will talk you through the options that suit your teeth. Aligners are not right for everyone.
Fitting treatment around your life
- Aligners are harder to spot than fixed metal braces, and they come out at mealtimes. They only work when worn for 20 to 22 hours a day.
- Fixed braces are normally reviewed every 8 to 10 weeks. Treatment typically lasts around 18 to 24 months, although this varies.
- Keep seeing your own dentist for check-ups during treatment.
Keeping your teeth straight
Teeth can shift whatever your age. Once treatment is finished, you will need to wear retainers every night while you sleep (8 to 10 hours), for as long as you want straight teeth. A replacement retainer is £105, or £210 for upper and lower.

Questions and answers
Am I too old for braces?
No. Orthodontic treatment has no upper age limit. Before treatment begins, your teeth and gums need to be healthy.
What do braces for adults cost in Portadown?
At our clinic, private metal braces and Smartee clear aligners are the same price. What you pay depends on how complex your case is: from £2,900 for super mild cases, from £3,900 for moderate cases and from £4,900 for complex cases. You can spread payments over 12 months with a £900 deposit followed by 12 monthly payments (a £150 plan fee is added to the remaining balance and divided across your 12 monthly payments).
Will I need my dentist to refer me?
Not if you are choosing private treatment. You can refer yourself through our self-referral form. If you want health service (NHS) treatment, your dentist needs to refer you.
I had braces as a teenager but my teeth have moved. Can you help?
Yes. Adults can be treated again to straighten teeth that have shifted. At your assessment, the orthodontist will go through your options and the fee. After that, wearing retainers for life helps prevent it happening again.
Do you offer clear braces?
Our Smartee clear aligners are removable and harder to spot than fixed metal braces. They are only available privately. See clear aligners.
